The purpose of this paper is to elicit the meaning of the wood and womb from the ecological perspective and how the wood and womb are connected.
According to the Greek mythology, Gaia is the Great Mother of the earth. All living beings originated from her womb are natured in her breasts. The process of the birth, growth, death itself is the process of life-circulation. Gaia's children interdependently live in her breasts. But the human being eventually loses the sense of belonging to nature and unity with other creatures, while trying to be the lord of nature through objectification of nature and subjectification of a human being. In Lady Chatterley's Lover, Clifford and Mrs. Bolton are described as the typical persons as human pride(hybris) against Gaia. Clifford's childishness toward Connie is felt throughout the story. It grotesquely climaxed by the gratification he feels when kissing Mrs. Bolton's breasts. She is the Magna Mater, full of power and potency, having the great blond child-man under her will. Clifford evades human responsibility by perversely distorting himself to a machinelike thing or reducing himself to an infant. Mrs. Bolton performs the role of the Magna Mater and leads him to the bitch-goddess of success.
Reversely, Connie who meets Mellors in the forest and experiences the vitality of love gets reborn as Gaia's child who feels a palpitation of life-will. Connie and Mellors are born as a fraternal twins in Gaia's womb. Through sexual unity with Mellors her recognition of the birth and life is expanded to a universal recognition of a human being and nature. Sexual unity with Mollors makes Connie rediscover her womanhood. She feels as if her womb had opened and filled with a new life. It means that Connie's womb is metaphorically expanded to the womb of the Great Mother and vice versa.
The fact that Clifford has been reared in the absence of mother and led by Mrs. Bolton to be a member of society who adores the bitch-goddess of success is the cause of Clifford's tragedy. Going out from the womb (ex-womb) is the cause of his tragedy. Reversely through going into the womb(eis-womb) Mellors is successfully reborn again.
