This study examines Baek Seok's use of poetic language such as Pyungahn dialect for a more comprehensive understanding of the sense of national identity and the will to overcome harsh reality exhibited in his poetry. Writing in the colonial Korea where his people's lives were devastated and the sense of national identity was almost lost. Nonetheless, Baek Seok believed in the importance of preserving traditional forms of Korean communities in restoring the sense of national identity among Koreans. What is most remarkable about Baek Seok's poetic language is his use of Pyungahn dialect. By using Pyungahn dialect, Baek Seok managed to offer a realistic representation of Korean people's lives and sentiments, through which he contributed to forming a bond of sympathy among people and creating a sense of community and ultimately preserving the sense of national identity.
This study also explores Baek Seok's poems composed during his life as an exile in Manjoo where he witnessed harsh realities of the lives of people exiled from their colonized country. In the poems composed during and after his life in Manjoo, Baek Seok's historical consciousness and desire to conquer harsh realities of his time are quite prominent. Baek Seok mainly focused on the mode of realism in an attempt to recognize the realities of people suffering under the colonial government and find the means to restore national communities. Baek Seok went much farther than merely utilizing localism and writing poems of strong folk colors. By using poetic language that reflects his people's lives, Baek Seok sought to reestablish the sense of national identity. His poetry also evinces a deep understanding of the realities of his colonized country as well as a serious attempt to overcome those realities through the apt use of poetic realism.
