The Buddhist tradition that divided a state of mind into the authentic purity and the inauthentic contamination is understood as the duplicity of humankind mind by Wonhyo. He explained it as the double-sidedness of the suchness of mind and the production-annihilation of mind. The suchness of mind without the production-annihilation is the noumenon of mind, and the production-annihilation of mind is the phenomenon of mind. Besides the suchness mind and the production-annihilation mind, the duplicity of humankind is reflected in the tath��gata-garbha as the combination of tath��gata nature and sattva nature, the ��laya-vij?��na as the harmony of true mind and polluted mind, and the Buddha nature as the ultimate reality and potential power. To achieve the ideal of Mahayana Buddhism that every humankind has the possibility of recovery of his own tath��gata nature, Wonhyo unifies the duplicity of humankind into the one mind.
