This study examines the compassion of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva and its psychological healing factors, focusing on the Lotus Sutra ¡¸The Chapter of the Universal Gate of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara¡¹(Ó^ÊÀÒôÆÐË_ÆÕéTÆ·). Avalokitesvara (Kwanseeum, Ó^ÊÀÒô) means to contemplate the sound of the world, that is, the sound of sentient beings. Therefore, it can be said that Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva exists as a saviour who sees, hears, and takes care of the pain that sentient beings appeal to.
This researcher understood the 'Seven disaster (Æßëy)', which symbolizes various disasters of the sentient beings, as psychological suffering, not actual disaster. It was viewed that when sentient beings in such a psychological disaster situation recited, praised, and thought about the name of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva responded to it with the bodhisattva's benevolent energy, and sentient beings gained psychological stability.
Tientai Zhiyi understands 'Ó^(guan: see)' of Avalokitesvara(Ó^ÊÀÒô) as the meaning of 'contemplation (Ó^ÕÕ)', so that Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva does not simply listen to the voices of sentient beings and respond to the sounds, but the point was emphasized that 'I, as a subject, contemplate the object'. According to his interpretation, the researcher regarded Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva as an ascetic himself who contemplates the inside, not an external transcendent.
Finally, by applying the concept of mercy to psychological healing and examining the methods and effects of 'compassion meditation' used as a psychotherapy program, it was discussed that the mercy of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva can be used as a practical method for psychotherapy.
