In this study, we want to examine the internalized shame, empathy, and cognitive emotional controlaffecting interpersonal ability of early adults, assuming that empathy and cognitive emotional controlwill mediate the process of internalized shame affecting interpersonal ability.
In order to analyze the mediated effects of empathy and cognitive emotional control in therelationship between internalized shame and interpersonal ability of early adults, this study used databased on an online survey which was conducted on 558 adult men and women (20~40 years old)nationwide.
The analysis methods were performed using SPSS 25.0 and AMOS 25.0 programs to analyzefrequency, confirmative factor analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, convergence feasibility,discriminative feasibility, structural spinning model, and bootstrapping.
The analysis results are as follows.
First, internalized shame in early adults mis-affected interpersonal ability, and empathy and cognitiveemotional control had a static effect on interpersonal ability.
Second, empathy in the relationship between internalized shame and interpersonal ability has acomplete mediating effect.
Third, cognitive emotional control in the relationship between internalized shame and interpersonalability has a completely mediating effect.
Fourth, there is a sequential mediating effect of empathy and cognitive emotional control in therelationship between internalized shame and interpersonal ability.
This study was able to specifically identify the psychological dynamics within an early adult byverifying its role as a medium of empathy and cognitive emotional control as mediation variables inthe relationship between internalized shame and interpersonal ability. Therefore, we suggest thatinterpersonal ability can be improved by increasing empathy and cognitive emotional control of earlyadults with internalized shame through counseling and psychotherapy approaches.
