The purpose of this study was to examine the mechanism that past peer victimization affected social anxiety among adults in early adulthood. Adults across the nation who were in early adulthood between the ages of 19 and 24 were tested on peer victimization, internalized shame, self-compassion, social anxiety, and data from 533 people were gathered. But inconsistent results have been reported on the factor structure of the Self-Compassion Scale. Therefore, in Study 1, we conducted a confirmatory factor analysis to evaluate 5 models. The results showed that a 2-second-order model consisting of two higher-order factors(Self-Compassion and Self-Coldness) and six first-order factors(Self-Kindness, Common humanity, Mindfulness, Self-judgment, Isolation, Over-identification). In Study 2, there was a significant positive correlation between past peer victimization, internalized shame, and social anxiety. On the other hand, self-compassion and self-coldness were not significantly correlated with past peer victimization, internalized shame, and social anxiety. Therefore, a structural equation modeling(SEM) was set up based on the data, and the relationship between past peer victimization, internalized shame, and social anxiety was examined. The findings of the study were as follows: First, the direct effect that past peer victimization had on social anxiety was not statistically significant. Second, the indirect effect that peer victimization had on social anxiety through the medium of internalized shame was statistically significant. The results showed that internalized shame was confirmed as a fully mediating variable between past peer victimization and social anxiety. The variance that social anxiety was explained by peer victimization, internalized shame was 44 percent. Finally, the implications of the findings of the study were discussed. This study is expected to make some suggestions on the understanding of social anxiety in early adulthood and intervention for that.
