This article describes a research project on the affective factors, writing beliefs, writing motivation, writing anxiety, and metacognition. A total of 240 high school student participants completed a questionnaire measuring the affective factors in writing. This was followed by an argumentative writing task to measure their writing abilities. The quantitative data relating to the affective factors were analyzed using structural equation modeling techniques. Confirmatory factor analysis provided evidence for the validity. A structural equation model showed how the affective factors can be linked to writing ability and how this finding may bridge a traditional divide between affective factors. Finally, this article illustrates the implications of bringing these affective factors together; emphasizes the necessity of investigating the role of each factor through an ethnographic view in light of the complexity of classroom contexts; and opens up possible topics for further studies.
