The aim of this paper is to study the characters of Vi??u avat¨¡ras and, through them, how Vi??u became a main god in Hinduism. In ?gveda Vi??u¡¯s role as god is rather lower and insignificant. Rays like the sun¡¯s light or firelight are seen as the personification of Vi??u. As light depends on the sun or firelight depends on fire, so does Vi??u on other gods. However, after Vedic periods, entering the age of epics and Pur¨¡?a, Vi??u, with ?iva, became the two main gods in Hinduism.
Now let¡¯s inquire into how he emerged as a main god in Hinduism. We can trace this transformative course in the avataras of Vi??u. When we inquire into the avat¨¡ras of Vi??u we can know that the attributes of gods including Vedic Brahma were expressed, on the one hand, as animals, but on the other hand, as human heros in historical events.
Through these avat¨¡ras, Vi??u absorbed their various attributes as his own, and thus ultimately, he became to hold all the attributes of one who befits a Das Umgreifende. Moreover, he placed each avat¨¡ra appropriately in the cycle of universe so that he, in due course, became the supreme god who assumes the responsibility for a whole period of cosmos(manvantara) through its creation, maintenance, and destruction. Besides, through including animal as well as human in the avat¨¡ras, he became the ultimate embracing all the beings.
We need to notice the fact that in the course of becoming the one, Vi??u didn¡¯t absorbed other gods directly. Rather he absorbed the diversified ones who were each god¡¯s avat¨¡ra. Through this fact we can know that the denomination of Vi??u adopts a rather meek and broad-minded stance as compared with other denominations like that of ?iva.
