In 2023, the 100th anniversary of the massacre of Koreans in the Great Kanto Earthquake, various research results were published in both Korea and Japan. Meanwhile, the Japanese politicians continues to deny and cover up. The Japanese film ��The Fukudamura Incident�� (directed by Tatsuya Mori) was released on September 1, 2023, the 100th anniversary of the Great Kanto Earthquake. It is a rare work that tackles the history of the atrocity head-on and is the first film drama of the massacre.
The Fukuda Village Incident refers to the massacre on September 6, 1923, of 10 peddlers from a discriminated group in Kagawa who went to Fukuda Village, Chiba Prefecture, to sell medicine. The incident was caused by a combination of xenophobia, occupational discrimination, ethnic discrimination, class discrimination, media neglect of responsibility, and state violence. The movie <Fukudamura Incident(SEPTEMBER 1923)> shows the Japanese massacre of Koreans in the context of the massacre of Koreans, and illustrates the mechanism of genocide in which 'ordinary people' brutally kill 'ordinary people'. This is based on the experience of violence and aggression accumulated in the course of ��colonial wars,�� colonialism, and the fear of Koreans that underlies it. And while this mechanism was created by the Japanese state, culminating in the Emperor, decades of violence and domination internalized it in the Japanese people, making them think that it was okay to kill Koreans for the sake of the village and the country. And Japanese state violence was directed not only at colonized Koreans, but also at socialists, labor activists, and other discriminated against people in Japan who posed a threat to imperial Japan.
In the movie, the Korean girl screams out her name just before she is slaughtered, and the boy in the peddler's troupe calls out the names of each of the victims. Further efforts should be made to restore the names of the victims of the Korean genocide.
