Samguk sagi (The History of Three Kingdoms) was written with the orientation towards the Silla dynasty, the winner of the history. Therefore, the history of the loser, the Baekje dyansty, is very brief compare than that of the winner. The main writer of the History of Three Kingdoms, Kim Busik, is the descendent of the royal family of the Silla dynasty that he cannot but have his perspective towards the dominant power. In this sense, the history of the Baekje dynasty has been distorted and shortened. For example, the music of the Baekje dynasty is very brief in its quantity and is very poor in its quality. Nevertheless, we cannot but depend on the Samguk sagi because there is no written history about the music of the Baekje dynasty.
The music of the Baekje dynasty recorded in Samguk sagi which referred to the Chinese histories such as Tongjeon (Encyclopedic History) and Buksa (The History of Norther Dynasties) are not the music practiced in the Baekje dynasty. It is one of the court musical repertories performed in the court of the Tang dynasty in the 7th and 8th centuries. In other words, the information of the music of the Baekje dynasty in Samguk sagi is not ¡®historical fact¡¯ at all. The compilers of Samguk sagi intentionally collected the Chinese sources and made intentional distortion to fit their world view. The losers of the history, the people of the Baekje dynasty, did not have a chance to speak in their own words who had experienced the past. They were not able to record their history. In this sense, the music of the Baekje dynasty recorded in Samguk sagi is not the objective reality but is based on the misinformation distorted by the writers of the history book.
Kim Busik and the compilers of the Samguk sagi have strong tendency toward to the Silla dynasty, the winner of the history. In this way, they intentionally distorted the music history of the Baeje dynasty, the loser of the history. As long as we take the historical records in Samguk sagi without the consideration of historical context of the compilers and their intention, we may perceive the wrong information without any hesitance.
