This study aims to explore the edifying values of the Jongmyojeryeak(�ڏR���Y��) . The Jongmyojeryeak is the music played at the Jongmyo Shrine for the gods of kings and queens of the time. The Jongmyojeryeak consists of three elements: song lyrics(����), musical instruments, and dance.
This study identifies the edifying values of the Jongmyojeryeak in three ways. First, the lyrics of Jongmyojeryeak contained the king's achievements and virtues. Through the lyrics, therefore, the king intended to edify his people, develop their moralities, and promote their virtues through the lyrics. Second, the familiar melodies for Jongmyojeryeak helped people learn the music easily, sing along with their neighbors, and internalize virtues such as integrity, responsibility, courage, compassion, and self-discipline. The familiar melodies of Jongmyojeryeak, which represented the harmony between heaven and earth, made for ultimate harmonious society. Third, the dance of Jongmyojeryeak expressed the virtue of the ancestors who had devoted themselves to make the society better. Watching and following the motions, the people were able to naturally accept the messages of virtue. For these reasons, the three components of Jongmyojeyeak made it possible to promote harmonious attitudes in people's minds and to maintain ultimate harmony in society.
