The ceremony of Royal Ancestral Shrine Music is largely divided into four steps: preceding step, greeting gods, amusing gods, and sending off gods. In each step, there is a special performance reflecting the purpose of the step. This ritual ceremony is compared to a play. It progresses like a play as follows. After the rehearsal is finished, gods enter at seat (a palace for the king's morning audience ����). Then, music, songs, and dances are performed. At the end of the performance, there is an acknowledgement for the audience; that is, all the people partake in eating sacrificial food and drink. Finally, the actors leave the stage, the curtain is dropped, and other staff put the stage in order.
From the theatrical point of view, the place for the ritual (Royal Ancestral Shrine) can be interpreted as a stage and seats. For example,the palace of the king's morning audience is the first seat for the first rate spectators (gods); the terrace stone and garden are outdoor stages.
In addition, participants in ritual, including a king, are actors. However,they can also be spectators when they have no specific roles.
Botaepyung(��̫ƽ) is performed in the step where participants amuse gods. Botaepyung can be interpreted as another play within the entire play. Its story develops from the first stage to the ninth stage, and the protagonist of each play appears in chronological order. These are ancestors of Joseon Dynasty. The whole story of Botaepyung is mainly divided into three sections: prologue, body, and epilogue. The body has nine episodes, and each episode describes historical events during the time of each ancestor. In conclusion, the religious ceremony of Royal Ancestral Shrine(�ڏR���Y) and its music have the value of the lively performing arts which retain their original artistic form, while other court ceremonies do not interact with our contemporary life. This paper is a meaningful attempt,in that, the Royal Ancestral Shrine Music is newly explored from the aspects of the directing techniques and the aesthetics not restricted only to music and dance. I hope that follow-up discussions will continue in a variety of academic circles.
