The main goal of this paper is to identify the shape and the categories of I-DU found in CHUAN GEUP GUKAN in order to apply to the usage of I-DU in the Official Documents of late Joseon era.
CHUAN GEUP GUKAN is primarily written in Chinese but we can identify grammar structures formed in Korean word order and Korean grammar elements, few nouns, and verbs marked in I-DU. As a whole, CHUAN GEUP GUKAN features general document form.
Unlike the past, 18th century I-DU seems to be a customary to the official documents rather than being an indivI-DUal grammar unit. CHUAN GEUP GUKAN is a document written by UIGEUMBU in order to report to the king the result of interrogating convicts. In the process, each structure of the sentences related to the situation is finished with I-DU.
Korean language has maintained its tradition of using Chinese or I-DU even after the invention of Hangeul. Nevertheless, the research on the History of Korean Textual Characters has focused mainly on the dual structure of Chinese (or Chinese characters) and Korean. This is an attitude neglecting the fact that I-DU was used in official documents and practical writings up to early 20th century. This paper has begun by reflecting on that attitude. The ultimate goal of this paper is to shed light on not so illuminated side of Korean, especially the usage and notation of I-DU in Korean history.
Study of language is a scientific approach to patterns. In this point of view, this paper will examine I-DU used in CHUAN GEUP GUKAN as a sentence patterns. Specifically, we will examine I-DU that connects to the descriptive words of the sentences, such as '-��-', '-��-', '-��-', '-��-'.
