This paper aims to review Joseon Munbeop(Joseon grammar)(1917) and Sujeong Joseon Munbeop(Joseon grammar revisited)(1923) written by An Hwak in the aspect of word formation, and examine meaning of these in history of Korean linguistics. As is widely known, word study in the early 20th century almost focused on part of speech, and there is little study of word formation at that time.
Most of grammar research in the early 20th century described expansion of words with ��change��, such as Byeonhaw, Byeonche, Jeonseong, Pakkum. But An Hwak(1917, 1923) was different with others because An Hwak used ��make��, such as Jak, Jakseongbeop in his literature. ��Myeongsa-ui Jakbeop�� of An Hwak(1917) and ��Myeongsa-ui Teukjong, Sukhap, etc.�� of An Hwak(1923) relate to word formation directly. An Hwak��s literature is very important reference on not only Susa(number) and Pumsa Tongyong(multicategory of words) but also word formation.
