In this article, I examined the narrative style and attitude of recognition concerning Korean dance history focusing on ¡®Dance of Joseon Music(4)¡¯ written by Ahn Hwak in the magazine of ¡°Joseon Dynasty¡± in 1930.
Ahn Hwak introduced the dance of each period by dividing periods such as the Three Hans period, Three Kingdoms period, the Goryeo period, the Yi dynasty, and the Modern period as in ¡°Joseon Musical History¡±. It was found that his narrative method on the basis of the historical records of Joseon dynasty, was the starting point of the research of Korean dance history similar to the narrative method of current Korean dance history.
Ahn Hwak¡¯ attitude of recognition on Joseon Dance focused on the four aspects such as the use of dance terminology, the narrative on the basis of historical records, the view point of dance, and the criticism of ¡®Yi-wang Jik¡¯ traditional musical band. First, Ahn Hwak used the term ¡®dance¡¯ as a western concept that emphasized the separation from the category of Joseon music. From this point of view, it showed the changed recognition of that era based on the traditional concept of ¡®music ˜·¡¯. Second, it was confirmed that Ahn Hawk¡¯ recognition of dance history was completed thoroughly by the narrative centered on historical records. Third, Ahn Hwak considered the beauty of dance itself was more important than ideological symbolism. So it showed the changing point that gradually became the consideration of art itself, away from the practical view of the service of political affairs. Fourth, due to the negative viewpoint of ¡®Yi-wang Jik¡¯ traditional musical band, Ahn Hwak could not describe the music and dance of that era from an objective standpoint.
The description of Ahn Hwak¡¯ Joseon dance history was meaningful in the aspects of starting point of description on Korean dance history reviewing the composition of narrative order and contents. On the other hand, however, his narrative on the basis of historical records and his attitude on dance of that era showed clear limits.
