Landfills have been and continue to be a growing problem in the United States. Overflowing waste is hard to control and brings many negative effects to our economics and environment. Some of these problems include the pollution of water, air and soil. In addition, it creates unrest among communities because no community wants a landfill near their homes. Considering the ideas above, what are the permanent impacts of landfills on our environment, economics, and state-to-state relations? Moreover, how do we have to deal with the waste problems? Nowadays, many European and Asian countries have adopted and practiced a strict law about household waste. My country, South Korea is the one of them and the volume-rate garbage and the separate collection laws have been in force since 1995. The volume-rate garbage law indicates that each household pays different tax for disposition of waste, depending on how much it makes. The separate collection law is that people have to gather recyclable products and leave those in front of their door on a day, which each city has chosen. The government then gives recycled products back to people or cut their taxes off according to how much they have collected. When I moved to the U.S. however, I was surprised no place to put recyclable products. Current legislation of the United States is far too voluntary in nature to improve our waste problem.
