Jeffersontown PD names off-duty officer, says neighbor he shot was unarmed
Jeffersontown's police chief has identified the off-duty officer who fatally shot a man this week, and confirmed that man was not armed with any weapons.
Marco Dorsey, 43, was shot to death Tuesday afternoon on Robsion Drive. (Scroll to the bottom to read a statement from Dorsey's family)
Police said he had been acting erratically on the street, and people in the area called on an officer in their neighborhood, 29-year-old Stevonte Wood, for help.
Chief Rick Sanders said Dorsey had been trying to break into homes and was busting car windows with his fist. He also said he was making violent statements.
Wood was off-duty and in street clothes when Sanders said Dorsey came up on Wood's front yard and approached his home, where his kids were inside.
Dorsey lived just a few homes away, police said. His girlfriend told police he was intoxicated at the time.
Sanders said the officer identified himself and issued multiple verbal commands to back away, then grabbed his radio and gun, walked outside and called or backup.
According to Sanders, Wood called police specifically for CIT, or Crisis Intervention Team, to get less lethal weapons involved.
Sanders said Wood kept himself between Dorsey and the homes he had targeted.
At some point, Dorsey, who Sanders described multiple times as "extremely muscular," charged at Wood and he fired several shots.
It's unclear how close the two were when shots rang out.
Sanders said the backup Wood called for was still blocks away when the shooting happened.
맥스카지노It's a very unfortunate situation for everybody involved, but I think Officer Wood did what he thought was appropriate at the time," Sanders said.
None of this was caught on body worn camera, as Wood was off duty. However, as mentioned above, there are surveillance videos, which Sanders said are currently with Kentucky State Police.
KSP is now leading the investigation.
Sanders said in a video he saw, Dorsey can be heard saying "Go ahead and shoot me. I want to die. Go ahead and shoot me."
Wood, a former LMPD officer, is currently on paid administrative leave.
After Thursday's news conference concluded, Dorsey's family gave a statement to 비바카지노 Viva:
"We are devastated and heartbroken by the tragic and senseless killing of our beloved Marco, a son, a brother, and a friend to so many. His life was taken far too soon by someone who had sworn to protect and serve 맥스카지노 whose actions have left a permanent void in our family.
"There is no justification for what happened. Marco deserved to live. He deserved to return home that day. Instead, we are left grieving, asking questions, and demanding answers.
"We are calling for full transparency, accountability, and justice. No badge should place anyone above the law. We want a thorough, impartial investigation, and we demand that the officer responsible be held fully accountable under the law 맥스카지노 just like any other citizen would be.
"We thank those who have stood with us 맥스카지노 friends, neighbors, and all who believe that justice must apply equally to everyone, no matter who they are.
"This is not just about our family 맥스카지노 it맥스카지노s about justice, fairness, and the value of every human life. We will not stop until justice is served for Marco."
