Jockey of Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty fined, suspended for excessive whipping
The jockey who rode Kentucky Derby 151 winner Sovereignty has been fined and suspended for excessive whipping.
Bloodhorse is reporting Sovereignty's jockey, Junior Alvarado, has been fined $62,000 and suspended for two racing days.
The rules of the Horse Racing Integrity and Safety Authority allow jockeys to use their crop up to six times during a race.
On Friday, Kentucky stewards ruled Alvarado used his crop eight times during the Derby.
Had Alvarado struck Sovereignty 10 times, the organization would have called for the horse's disqualification and harsher penalties for the jockey.
Alvarado's hefty fine is larger than most violations because it was doubled, as it was his second offense within a 180-day period.
His first offense was at Churchill Downs in December 2024.
Alvarado will serve his suspension from May 29-30, but the ruling is under appeal.
