Country House becomes first horse to win Kentucky Derby on objection
Country House has been named the official winner of the 145th Kentucky Derby.
Maximum Security crossed the finish line first, but an objection was filed and after several minutes of deliberation and review, he was ultimately disqualified.
Stewards agreed that he made a wide blocking move that interfered with the path of several horses.
Chief State Steward Barbara Borden explained how the stewards came to the decision at a press conference following the race.
"The riders of the 18 (Long Range Toddy) and 20 (Country House) horses in the Kentucky Derby lodged objections against the 7 horse (Maximum Security), the winner, due to interference turning for home leaving the quarter pole," Borden said. "We had a lengthy review of the race. We interviewed the affected riders. We determined that (Maximum Security) drifted out and impacted the progress of No. 1 (War of Will), in turn interfering with the 18 and 21 (Bodexpress). Those horses were all affected, we thought, by the interference. Therefore, we unanimously determined to disqualify (Maximum Security) and place him behind 18맥스카지노18 being the lowest-placed horse that he bothered, which is our typical procedure."
It's the first time in history the horse that crossed the line first didn't win the race.
Maximum Security was the favorite in early wagering with 9-2 odds. He also previously won the Florida Derby.
Country House was a longshot with 65-1 odds, making the win a major upset.
Jockey Flavien Prat celebrated as the finish was announced to the surprised crowd of 157,729. That's the lowest attendance since 2004.
The payout for Country House is $132.40, $56.60 and $24.60.
