Memorial Day tribute at Zachary Taylor Cemetery honors fallen soldiers
Before Monday's ceremony even began, visitors to Zachary Taylor National Cemetery paused to honor the brave men and women who gave everything in service to our nation.
Under a bright May sky, the cemetery grounds were filled with quiet reflection and patriotic pride, each headstone adorned with an American flag.
Veterans and families, such as Joel Strieter, shared a collective moment of gratitude.
"It's wonderful to see everybody come out and express gratitude for what all these people have done, making our country what it is," Strieter said.
Among the visitors was William Fortson, who traveled from Sellersburg, Indiana, to honor his grandparents and remember those who never came home.
"I remember the sacrifice, the people who fought in battle; this is a very special day for me," Fortson said.
For others, like Jeremy Peercy, it was a teachable moment, as he sought to instill the significance of Memorial Day in his children.
"We need to make this real to them, that these were actual people who sacrificed for our country," Peercy said.
For Marines like Strieter, visiting the cemetery is profoundly personal and an act of connection.
"I like to visit my fellow Marines," he said. "It gives me a keen sense of gratitude."
In a simple but powerful reminder that freedom is never free, Louisville came together this Memorial Day to honor the more than 14,000 men and women laid to rest at Zachary Taylor National Cemetery, giving thanks to those who stood and continue to stand in the gap for our freedoms.
