Crystal Rogers case: Former boyfriend Brooks Houck charged with murder
Crystal Rogers' former boyfriend, who has long been considered a main suspect in her 2015 disappearance, has been arrested for murder.
The FBI in Louisville said Brooks Houck, 41, of Bardstown, has been arrested on charges connected to the Rogers investigation. The indictment says he's charged with both murder and tampering with physical evidence.
"In coordination with the Kentucky State Police, other local and federal law enforcement partners, FBI Louisville has been laser-focused on our commitment to hold accountable those that were responsible for the disappearance of Crystal Rogers," said the FBI in a statement. "Today, we take a significant step in making good on that promise."
An arrest citation says he was taken into custody around 9:13 a.m on Hawthorns Way, which is in a subdivision where he is building homes. He was taken to Nelson County Jail then transferred to Hardin County.
Additional details are expected to be revealed during his arraignment in early October in the Nelson County Circuit Court. His bond is set at $10 million cash.
Since the mother of five disappeared eight years ago from Bardstown, the only suspect ever named before this month was Houck, her boyfriend at the time, with whom she shares a child.
He had never been charged in connection with the crime until now.
Her family released this statement in response to his arrest:
"This morning the Ballard family received word that Brooks Houck was arrested for an indictment warrant after being indicted by a Nelson County Grand Jury. Brooks Houck was named the number one suspect in Crystal맥스카지노s case in 2015. We want to thank the FBI, Kentucky State Police, Nelson County Sheriff맥스카지노s Office, Attorney General's Office, Commonwealth Attorney Shane Young and staff as well as the juries.
"At this time we ask for privacy as this is another step forward for justice for Crystal. Continue to pray that justice is served and we bring Crystal home."
This is actually the second arrest in her disappearance this month. Joseph Lawson, 32, of Bardstown was arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit murder and tampering with physical evidence.
Lawson's attorney confirmed the charges are connected to the case but declined to say more. He pleaded not guilty in court on Thursday. Lawson remains behind bars on a $500,000 cash bond.
More background on the investigation
Rogers was 35 when she was reported missing July 5, 2015. She was last seen with Houck.
That day, her car was found abandoned with a flat tire on Bluegrass Parkway in Bardstown. Her phone, purse and keys were still inside the car.
The FBI took over the investigation into Rogers' disappearance back in 2020. Since then, there have been multiple searches in Bardstown.
Most, if not all, of them have centered around the Houck family.

That search we covered last October focused on the Houck family farm where Rogers was last seen alive.
Houck's grandmother, Anna Whitesides, has been connected to the case, as well. The state said back in 2016 that they believed her car was used to dispose of Rogers' body. She refused to testify when called to court.
Within the first year of Rogers' disappearance, Brooks' brother, Nick Houck, was fired from the Bardstown Police Department for interfering with the investigation.
Early on, a friend and employee of Brooks Houck, Danny Singleton, faced 38 counts of perjury for lying to detectives during the investigation, but pleaded guilty to lesser charges of false swearing.
Tommy Ballard, Roger맥스카지노s father, was also killed a year after her disappearance. His death was also never solved.
