JCPS names 2 finalists in search for new superintendent
Jefferson County Public Schools is one step closer to naming a new superintendent.
The school district announced on Tuesday that the Board of Education has narrowed down its list to two finalists.
The search has been going on since current JCPS superintendent Marty Pollio announced he would be retiring after this school year last September.
The first finalist in the search is Ben Shuldiner, who is the superintendent of the Lansing School District in Michigan, which has a little more than 10,000 students.
According to JCPS, Shuldiner has more than "25 years of experience transforming education as a teacher, principal, professor, school board member, and superintendent." They also touted his efforts to increase graduation rates within LSD by 26% and boost attendance by 13%.
Other achievements of Shuldiner's JCPS highlighted were helping LSD achieve Michigan's highest reading growth scores from 2022-24 and launching initiatives such as universal pre-K.
The other finalist named in the search is H. Brian Yearwood, who holds a doctorate in educational leadership and statistics.
He retired from Columbia Public Schools in Missouri as superintendent, a district with a little more than 18,000 students.
He had three years left on his contract in CPS, before retiring. Local reports state CPS was set to pay him more than $667,000 in a separation agreement.
JCPS says Yearwood began his education career as a middle school physical science teacher and later worked as an assistant superintendent at Manor Independent Schools District in Texas.
One of his highlights JCPS cited was increasing the Columbia Public Schools district's Annual Performance Report by 16 points as superintendent. He served in that role from 2021-24.

While neither men have experience as a superintendent in a district as big as JCPS, board member Gail Logan-Strange says she's focused on their skills.
"Well, certainly size matters," said Strange. "But equally as important are the skills that they bring to this position. Test scores improving, and proficiency in literacy and numeracy, turning schools around. We've got candidates who have done that."
"Any district, I think, regardless of size, would love to have both of them," she added.
Both men will partake in a final round of interviews and Q&A sessions with the community, district staff, and other key stakeholders in May.
The community Q&A sessions are scheduled for May 20. The first session will take place from 4-6 p.m. at 3902 Atkinson Square, while the other will be held from 7-9 p.m. at Stopher Elementary School.
The first Q&A session will be livestreamed on the
